Segovia

Yesterday we went on our first excursion to Segovia. It's just over the mountains from Madrid, about an hour to the North.
Such a  beautiful, historic city!

After we met up with our tour guide, we headed toward the Plaza Mayor. On the way, we saw lots of churches (there are 28 in the city).

We went inside the cathedral, and it was fabulous! It was constructed over several years, so it's got a gothic exterior and a Renaissance interior. Also, the outside kinda looks like the jungle temple from The Jungle Book.
No pictures allowed inside, sorry :(

After the cathedral, we went to Alcázar (Arabic for "the castle"). They say this is where Disney got his inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty castle at Disneyland:

They gave us 2 hours of free time to go roam, so a group of us went to check out the Roman aqueduct. Just cut stones and gravity, no cement. Still standing after 2000 years! Gotta love the Romans.

Wrapped it all up with a trip to the bakery. They have these candies called "yemas" (yokes) that are basically egg yolks and sugar. Surprisingly delicious. I also had a napolitana - kind of like a flaky pastry with chocolate inside. YUM!

On a personal note: I was feeling pretty homesick for the past couple of days, but going out and about made me feel better. Moral of this story: Go out and see the world! :D

Stay tuned for the next adventure!

  1. I want that castle. They can bring it here, can't they? Can you imagine a castle being pulled on one of those "wide load" trucks? Drawbridge included? Awesome.

The house below is so nice, too!
